Back in 2020 when I decided to make this book, I naively assumed it might take about 6 months to put together.
It didn’t.
Since then I’ve scrapped umpteen elaborate designs, written and deleted 30,000 words*, watched much more of my head turn grey and travelled the world on many trips that have yielded photos I was so desperate to include, I thought it imperative to always just see if the next trip in the calendar did the same…
Which is how despite me having started conversations about this book with the printers before the birth of my son (who starts school soon…) it’s yet to be released.
Finally though we’re here, and I’m over the moon with it.
In short, Human Nature is a study of people and our surroundings, our structures and the landscapes we build them in.
If you’re brave enough to look at the News you’ll be regularly reminded that our species has cocked up many of our interactions with Earth. And while it’s clear we can’t be regarded as the most trusted of tenants, to my eye our footprint isn’t always negative, visually at least. I hope this book is a celebration of that.
I can’t thank you enough for your support (and patience) and I hope you think it’s worth the wait.
James
*I should explain the deletion of the 30,000 words and the scrapping of elaborately designed pages that I battled with for months on end with… Basically I realised after a while that I was decorating, trying to find any excuse to not let the photos just speak for themselves, which as it turns out is a scary thing to do as a photographer.
